At two o’clock Dieter Wolfe walked up to the KWPD building and picked up the receiver of the black phone on the wall. “I have an appointment with Detective Sharkey. My name is Dieter Wolfe.”

“I’ll let him know, and he’ll come and get you.”

The elevator door opened, and Sharkey stepped out and opened the door to the lobby so he could enter the building.

“Dieter, good to see you.” Sharkey extended his hand and Dieter shook it.

“Good to see you too, my friend.”

“Let’s go up to my office where we can talk.”

Maggie had set up the table and Sharkey introduced Dieter.

“So nice to meet you,” Maggie said shaking his hand.

“Ah, Sharkey, you have a lovely addition to your department.”

“She is wonderful,” Sharkey said. “Come and have a seat at our table. Coffee?”

“Thank you, that would be very nice.”

“The reason we wanted to talk to you is in regard to your renter, Elton Cambridge.”

Dieter’s eyebrow raised. “All right.”

“How long has Elton been renting the shop from you?”

“After my son died, I had to rent out his shop. It was an important part of my income.”

Sharkey nodded.

“He rented it when I ran it in the classified section of the paper. Maybe two months after Heinrich’s death. He pays me every month on time, and he’s a very pleasant person. I like him a lot. He’s like having my son back with me. If I need help with something, he always comes to help. I’m getting old, and it’s hard to do all the work around my place anymore.”

“I see. Do you know how long he’s been in Key West?”

“He moved here after he completed his training and apprenticeship. He’s certified to work with diesel engines. He’s very accomplished. On a personal side he helped me get through Heinrich’s death. He’s a good listener.”

“Okay, that gives us some insight. That’s what we were looking for.”

“My pleasure. I think he’s a fine man.”

“Thanks for coming in. I’ll walk you back downstairs.”

Sharkey returned and Maggie came over to his desk. “So, what do you think?”

“He has given us some insight into Elton. But you must take into consideration that he knew that his son was different but had no idea that he had intentionally killed someone.”

“What?” Maggie said.

“Sorry, I should have briefed you on that. So, we know his personal opinion, duly noted,” Sharkey said. “Wouldn’t want to be accused of having tunnel vision you know.”

“Who else knows Elton?”

“His neighbors watch him, but they’re not close. I think he is pretty much a loner. We’ll keep an eye on him.”
